MAPALAPA is truly unique. It is a medium density hardwood with a hardness similar to Oak, Kiaat and Teak. This makes it relatively harder than most plantation timber species. The drying shrinkage of MAPALAPA is relatively low compared to most hardwood of the same density making MAPALAPA more dimensionally stable than most other timber species used for timber flooring. It is light in colour with a straight grain, suitable for staining making it an ideal substitute for joinery and moulding work.
In the heart of Malawi, a sustainably managed Hevea plantation resource, sustains employment for 400 native Malawians through rubber production and sustainable sawmilling operations when the trees reach the end of their useful production life.
The beautiful golden to dark brown nature of Teak is internationally recognised as being THE timber for outdoor use because of its natural oils and ease of being worked. It is one of the timbers used externally that show no reaction or corrosion from the fastners used with it. Because of its natural oils, it is highly resistant to moisture and exposure to weather making it very durable. The oils are reputed to act as natural insecticides which aid in its resistance to attack. Teak is also known for its dramatic colour change and will darken to a golden brown with time. When sealing for inside use, it should be solvent cleaned first to ensure minimal interference from all of its natural oils.
